Types of Tigers

How many types of tigers are there in the world?

Depending upon habitat, diet, adaptations, stripe pattern, tigers are of 9 types. The markings are so unique, like a human fingerprint, that researchers are actually using them to identify a particular tiger.

Tiger Subspecies

Information about the tiger subspecies that still survive in the world. There are six subspecies of tigers, Bengal tiger, Siberian tiger, Sumatran tiger, Malayan tiger, Indochinese tiger, South China tiger.

Bengal tiger ( Panthera tigris tigris):

The Bengal tiger inhabits the Indian subcontinent, and it is known to live both in semi-desertic areas and the grasslands where it is wet and cool, typical of the region.

Found in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Bhutan. Bengal tigers can be found in grasslands, alluvial forests, tropical, subtropical forests, mangrove forests, rainforests, deciduous forests, scrub forests.

The average weight of 175-260kg.

Siberian tiger(Panthera tigris altaica):

The Siberian tiger is the largest of all subspecies, but this only happened in captivity. As its name implies, it inhabits the region of Siberia in Russia.

Found in Siberia, Russian far east, North Korea, Northeast China, weight 100-167kg, lighter than Bengal tiger.

Sumatran tiger(Panthera tigris sumatrae):

The Sumatran Tiger is native to the island of the same name. It is smaller than other species of tigers and has one of the most critical situations. It is classified as Critically Endangered in the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, around 300 in the wild. Breeding in captivity.

Found in dense forests of Sumatra only.

Malayan tiger(Panthera tigris jacksoni):

The Malayan tiger inhabits only the peninsula with such a name. A few years ago, it was considered part of the Indochinese tiger, but based on genetic analyses, it was split into a different species.

Found in the southern Malay Peninsula, smallest of all subspecies.

Indo Chinese tiger(Panthera tigris corbetti):

The Indochinese or Corbett tiger that once populated much of Asia today lives thanks to conservation efforts. It dwells in areas of Vietnam, Thailand, China, and Cambodia.

Commonly found in Burma, Cambodia, Laos, China, Vietnam, Thailand. Darker in color and smaller in size than the Bengal tiger.

South China tiger( Panthera tigris amoyensis):

It is one of the smaller tigers and also one of the most threatened. It is considered extinct in the wild as there have not been confirmed sightings in its natural habitat for 25 years.

The most endangered subspecies, weight between 100-118 kg.

Extinct Tiger Species

Three tiger subspecies disappeared in the 20th century. The last Balinese Tiger died in 1937, and until that time, the subspecies lived on the Island of Bali. In the 1950s, the Caspian Tiger became extinct.

1) Bali tiger(Panthera tigris balica): Indonesian tiger,weight 90-100kg,almost extinct.

2) Caspian tiger (Panthera tigris virgata): Found in the west and south Caspian sea, extinct subspecies.

3) Javan tiger (Panthera tigris sondica: Bigger than Bali Bali tiger, weight 100-140 kg, extinct subspecies, last seen Mount Baitiri area 1979.

Make the most of it, though. I give the tiger perhaps 30 years in the wild before it goes extinct, and the roar is lost in the jungles forever.
